While debates about the ethical and transparent use of AI are currently raging in our society, it’s safe to say that some discussions are completely unnecessary. Case in point: Mom is currently specifying that no AI was used in her birthday party thank you cards.
Girl, we know. There is absolutely no way to mistake what you’ve done here with artificial intelligence.
One week after Mom’s birthday party at P.F. Chang’s, everyone in attendance received a handmade card on Mom’s stationery that has her name on it, with handwritten messages thanking everyone for the gifts they brought her. Each card contained a line on the back written in cursive that said, “MY COMMITMENT TO YOU: No AI generated images or text were used in the production of these cards.” And it’s like, obviously, Mom. We promise you that absolutely nobody in the family suspected for even a second that the color pencil drawing of a daisy on the front of these thank cards was made using Midjourney.
Seriously, we appreciate the transparency and commitment to authenticity, but Mom really did not need to be concerned about this.
“Was she worried that we thought she asked ChatGPT to write this little poem thanking me for getting her a copy of Lessons In Chemistry?” asked Cousin Mia, one of nearly a dozen confused family members who felt that Mom’s AI disclaimer was superfluous and even a little baffling. “When I see nine exclamation points at the end of a sentence thanking me for being so beautiful inside and out, my first thought is, ‘Only [Mom] could have written this.’ I’m not even sure what prompt you’d give to Claude or Gemini to generate the sentence, ‘I’m so proud of the treasure you’ve become.’ That’s 100% pure human [Mom].”
You’ve got to hand it to Mom on this one thing, though: She has principles. When Uncle Simon asked her why she had felt the need to specify that she made her cards without AI, Mom went on a long rant about how “families deserve honesty” and “thank you cards are for humans.” She’s clearly committed to her beliefs in keeping AI out of any notes acknowledging gifts or expressing gratitude in any way. Mom, we salute you for going above and beyond to keep your thank you cards AI free, but there was literally not a single person who was worried about that.
